The Unexplained: A Martian Mystery

A camera on NASA’s Mars Curiosity Rover took an amazing photo that looks more and more like the spine of a dragon.

In 2015 a chief scientist at NASA made this prediction:  signs of alien life will be found by 2025.  This is a tantalizing claim.  The claim did not say “aliens.”  It said: “signs of.”

Scientist, Ellen Stofan, said during a panel discussion that we know how to look and we know where to look.  She added that we have most of the technology and we are implementing it.  Most scientists there agree that new telescopes will be a big factor.

We are one generation away from finding evidence of life in our own solar system, and one generation away from finding evidence of life on a planet orbiting a nearby star.

NASA’s Mars Curiosity Rover landed on Mars on August 5, 2012.  Its job was to send back amazing images, and it did–over a million!  More importantly, it was to find out if Mars had ever had the elements to support even microscopic life.  It has.

It has proven the past presence of both water and the building blocks of life–while it has been motoring about the Gale Crater.

Just recently, on April 1, 2023, a camera on Curiosity took an amazing photo.  When we saw it, it was a shock.  It was not a joke, considering the date.  It was for real.  It is an image of Martian rock formation which seemed to have perfectly spaced mackerel bones protruding from it.  Could these be the fossilized skeleton of an ancient fish?

Then, it started looking more and more like the spine of a dragon.  It is now called the Dragon Bone image.

There were images of similar structures nearby.  They appear very much to be the fossilized remains of creatures–creatures on Mars.  I pondered what this could mean.  I could not quit examining the image.  Animals may have been on Mars.  If not evidence if animals, it was evidence of an intelligent construction.

When the very first images of Martian terrain were beamed back to Earth, I could not take my eyes off of them.  I kept examining every inch.  I was certain I occasionally saw discarded tin cans or Coke cans.  We know they weren’t cans, but the fact they were rocks, and almost perfect cylinders, is startling enough.

Andrew Good, of NASA, explained that when water once flowed on Mars, it deposited minerals across the area in certain patterns according to the hardness of the minerals–this later made it easier for wind to erode softer minerals away–leaving the hard, spine-like deposits.  No fossils.

I remembered in my distant past, when looking at different minerals under a microscope, the crystals have different, and sometimes amazing shapes.  Regular old table salt appears as perfect little cubes.

If the strange formations were not made by wind erosion, in some instances, odd shapes could come about, just because of the formation of the crystals that make them up.  That could explain some of the cylinders I saw.  A rock flower, with petals, formed on Mars, due to the mineral composition and wind

erosion factors.

Arthur C. Clarke (d. 2008) made his own study of Mars images and he remained firm that he had seen bushes on Mars that changed color and shape with the seasons.  He never wavered.

Other people studying the images have reported finding lizards, rats, rabbits, faces, constructed doorways leading into caves, walking humanoids in clothing, shiny spheres, and even a mermaid sculpture.

I am not ready to give up.

We may not really know until we get some people up there.

There may be some fossils waiting to be found.

There may be something alive waiting to be found.
