Last night I finished the latest book on my reading list and began a random search of the archived works on my Kindle. I was not in the least surprised to find that over the last couple of years I have built up quite a collection of Indie books.

I built that library of New Fiction the old-fashioned way: I bought the books.

That is not to say that I haven’t received some advanced review copies from authors.  I have.

But even if I am reading a book to review it, I make it a practice to purchase the book.  This is the best way I know to support my brothers and sisters in the Indie authors rank and file.

Talk is cheap, so are Indie books.

I read a lot about people who bemoan the quality of non-traditionally published works.  They must not read the same books I do.  From my perspective as one who spends a great deal of time attempting to put words on paper so that they fit together with some sort of design, I find that it is not the poor quality of a few Indie books that bothers me.

Rather, what strikes me is the richness of the writing in the Indie universe that confronts me time and again. It seems that not a day passes when I don’t find a new Indie author with a great book, or a whole series of great books.

So many fine Indie books, so little time to read them.  That’s my problem.

It’s easy to spot a book worth reading.  With the technology available today on ereaders, a reader can download a sample of a book for free.  That sample is long enough to give a reader a good sense of the author’s writing chops and to allow her to make an informed buying decision.

But that is the critical thing.  It is not enough to talk the talk.  Both readers and Indie authors need to walk the walk.  The only way to do that is to hit the buy button.

Don’t wait for the book to come up free on a store somewhere.  Let an Indie author know you really care.

Put your money where your  mouth is and Vote Indie.
