Max Williams: A Blessed Man

The story of Max Williams who found fame on the basketball court and a fortune in the Texas oilfields.

MAX WILLIAMS HAS been blessed. He believes it. He will tell you so.

He asks, “How could a boy living in a West Texas town that had only a hundred and fifty people, graduating from a school that had only twelve seniors, hold the Texas high school scoring record for basketball?”

Max did it.

He doesn’t understand how or why.

He asks, “How could a boy too small to play basketball wind up at SMU, playing for the legendary Coach Doc Hayes and becoming an All-American?”

Max did it.

He doesn’t understand how or why.

He asks, “How could an insurance salesman who didn’t like to sell insurance suddenly be chosen to organize and run a professional basketball team when the American Basketball Association was looking for a new franchise?

Max did it.

He doesn’t understand how or why.

He asks, “How could someone trying to survive the commercial real estate and savings & loan crash wind up drilling for oil in Austin Chalk – famous for dry holes and broken hearts – and discovering the largest oilfield in the United States during the past fifty years?”

Max did it.

He has never understood how or why.

There is only one explanation.

He was blessed.
