Inside the literary mind of Alan Black

What is Metal Boxes at the Edge all about?

Alan Black has been writing novels since 1996. His writing tastes are as eclectic as his reading preferences. He is an award winning author with three number one Amazon best selling SciFi novels. Black is an indie multi-genre writer who has never met a good story he didn’t want to tell.

Alan Black’s vision statement: “I want my readers amazed they missed sleep because they could not put down one of my books. I want my readers amazed I made them laugh on one page and cry on the next. I want to give my readers a pleasurable respite from the cares of the world for a few hours.

I want to offer stories I would want to read.”

Today, I am interviewing Alan Black, and one reviewer said of his work: He can spin a yarn, then weave it into a cloak of fantastic fantasy. What else needs to be said?

Question: Tell me about your newest book and what was the inspiration behind your writing it?

Alan: My most recent project (published October 1st, 2016) is my 19th published book. It’s METAL BOXES – AT THE EDGE, book four in the METAL BOXES series. It follows the continuing adventures of Trey Stone. I was pushed into writing this book by the readers of the earlier books. Book one and three both hit number one in their genre section on Amazon and book two won a major award at the Cirque du Livre Writer’s Conference in Mesa Arizona. Besides with, it’s a fun story and loads of laughs to write.

Question: Why and when did you decide to become a writer?

Alan: I was first introduced to the idea of being a writer in 1960 by a second grade teacher. Of course, everyone laughed at a second grader proclaiming his intention to be a writer. That negative response took a while to get over. I did not finish my first novel until 1998 and didn’t publish anything until 2001 and I became a full time writer in 2013.

Question: What book has been the greatest influence on you and your writing and why?

Alan: I think my first scifi novel set me on the path. TUNNEL IN THE SKY by Robert Heinlein showed me what science fiction could be. That is why half of what I write is scifi. The rest is a bit of everything, because I still read everything.

Question: Where do you find ideas for your books?

Alan: Ideas are easy to come by. They come from everywhere and anywhere. Honest, I have more story ideas saved in a special idea file than I have time left to write the book.

Question: Where do you find ideas for your characters?

Alan: I just think up a character that I would like to meet. Someone strong and capable, but filled with human foibles and issues. Then I throw all of the crap at them I can think of.

Question: How would you describe your writing style?

Alan: I’m a pantser. I can’t tell you where the next paragraph is going until I get there.

Question: What do you consider the most difficult part of writing a book?

Alan: The first paragraph is always the hardest.

Question: What are your current projects?

Alan: I am writing two stories at once. The first is tentatively titled BLANK SPACE. It is the sequel to my scifi novel EMPTY SPACE about a serial killer in space. (yeah, Dexter in space). The second is titled CHRISTMAS IN APACHE JUNCTION. It is a high school sweet romance…sort of. See, I do read a bit of everything.
