I Wuz Just Thinking: The Birthday Cake

After thirty-five years of marriage, I was totally flabbergasted by my husband’s sudden question. It floored me. I couldn’t believe what he was saying.

Wednesday, October 27, is my husband Jimmy’s 78th birthday.

He and I have been married for nearly thirty-five years, and for most of those years, a German chocolate birthday cake was either cooked or bought for him.

One year, Jimmy looked at his birthday cake, took a deep breath, and asked, with a certain amount of disappointment, “Why do you always give me a German chocolate cake for my birthday?”

I was surprised by his question.  I said, “Because that is your favorite cake!”.

He looked at me with a puzzled expression on his face and said, “I don’t like German chocolate cake.”

I stood there perplexed as my brain cells were in a whirl, trying to comprehend what he had just told me.

Suddenly, one brain cell popped open and there was the answer.

I couldn’t believe it.

It couldn’t be.

Jimmy did not love German chocolate cake.

German chocolate cake was my first husband’s favorite.
