I Wuz Just Thinking: Pranks in the Night

One o’clock can be a funny or a frightful time in the morning. Photo: Cooley Women’s Center

I stood there doubled over with laughter. Neither of my siblings thought my prank was as funny as I did.

I was recently reading the column of Jack Stallard in the newspaper telling of his April Fool jokes toward his siblings and the neighborhood kids.

It reminded me of the pranks I pulled on my siblings.  It was a dark stormy night…perfect timing.

It was about twelve-thirty in the middle of the night.  I dressed as if I was going to school, went into the kitchen began rattling some pots and pans…the noises that could be heard when mother was cooking breakfast.

I hollered to my sisters, “MARTHA, JULIA, YOU BETTER GET UP AND READY OR YOU WILL BE LATE FOR SCHOOL.”  They awoke, rubbing their eyes, and asked why was it so dark outside.

I told them,” IT’S DARK BECAUSE IT WINTER AND THERE ARE DARK CLOUDS BECAUSE IT’S RAINING OUTSIDE!”

I went back into the kitchen and made the sounds of breakfast cooking. I was careful not to be too loud as I definitely did not want to wake my parents.

Martha and Julia finally got up and dressed for school.  They came to the dining-kitchen area

No one was there.

They looked at the clock.

It was nearing one o’clock in the morning.

After looking at the clock, they turned toward the kitchen stove.

Where were the biscuits?

None were baking.

They .looked at me.

They looked back at the clock.

Wow, the look on those two faces. Neither of them thought my prank was as funny as I did.

I stood there doubled over in laughter.

No wonder, at times, they did not want to claim me as their little sister, as I wuz just thinking.
