Graham Huston: Meet the Characters of Magnolia Bluff

Guilt walks along beside me, but guilt found me years ago crawling across a rocky ledge the color of blood and has been hanging around ever since.

Graham Huston is a drifter who keeps his past to himself. He wanders into Magnolia Bluff and takes any job he can find, which is sweeping the floors and cleaning the press for the small-town daily newspaper.

No one knows why he chose to come to Magnolia Bluff.

But he spends a lot of time at the cemetery.

His past is a secret.

His past is a mystery.

Most of what we know of him is revealed when the army sent him to a psychiatrist.

We scratch the surface of his mind.

But it’s only a scratch.

Eulogy in Black and White is his story.

THE RAIN COMES and it goes, and it washes away everything in Magnolia Bluff but the blues. Rain cleanses the streets but not the soul. Guilt walks along beside me, but guilt found me years ago crawling across a rocky ledge the color of blood and has been hanging around ever since.

The Army sent me to a shrink.

I didn’t say much.

I just answered questions.

Name?”

            “Graham Huston.”

            “Rank?”

            “Captain.”

            “Serial Number?”

            “None of your damn business.”

“Did you kill anyone in combat?”

“What do you think? I was in combat.”

            “Still see their faces?”

            “I see their eyes.”

            “When you’re asleep?”

            “When I’m awake.”

“How do their eyes make you feel?”

            “Guilty.”

“Well,” he said, “it was a time of war, and you had merely answered the call. You should never feel guilty.” He smiled. “You are not guilty.”

Then it was my turn.

I looked hard at him.

I saw the corner of his mouth quiver.

“You ever in combat?” I asked.

            He shook his head.

“Then how do I know?” I asked.

            “Know what?”

            “If I’m guilty or not.”

            He swallowed hard.

“We’ll get you through this,” he said.

I never went back.
