Special Agent Finnegan by Mimi Barbour

Special Agent Finnegan by Mimi Barbour Purchase:

Love for his father makes a man weak – what’ll happen when he gives his heart to a woman?

When Special Agent Finnegan O’Reilly gets shot, and the news brings on his father’s heart attack, he decides to take leave from further undercover assignments. The O’Reilly has suffered enough and Finn can’t be the cause of more distress for this beloved old rascal. Then his boss forces one more case on him – to take place in their own pub.

Acting as the target to expose serial, suicide killers rampaging through New York City, Finn must play the part of a wife-beater, a cheating husband and an all-time jerk. No problem, until he meets his make-believe wife.

Renée Knight enjoys her job as a New York City cop. Her disguises have become a permanent fixture in her life, and no one knows what she really looks like. Except for the father she loves fiercely… the man, whose suicide makes no sense.

If it means going undercover in an Irish pub where the culprits hang out, she’s their girl. Playing the wife of the bar owner to catch the killers—easy. But they never intend for her to fall for this guy, she does this all on her own.

Now she has to hire the assassins to arrange his suicide. Can she catch them, before they complete the mission?

It’s time to admit my weakness in order to explain about the next series taking place in Vegas. I’m hooked on cop shows and I really enjoy the action and excitement of Vegas. So naturally when I decided to write romantic suspense, I put the two together and came up with an explosive series. There’s a lot of fast-paced, thrilling action to keep you turning the pages. The fans have loved this about the “Vegas” series.

So…wanting to please those people I adore, I’ve started a comparable series called “Undercover FBI.”  It’s similarly thrilling, has lots of heart-stopping moments but each book will stand on its own. Therefore, you’ll be able to buy any novel without having to follow any order.

    Review by Katy Walters:

This is an attention grabber from the first page. It held me fixated, tapping my kindle screen through to the early hours. I always promise myself I will click off at 1.00 am, but as usual I was entranced, still couched down in my pillows muttering, `Just one more page.’

The story sparks off with a tense situation that which swiftly had the hackles rising, as two lethal killers played with their victim. Mimi structures each chapter with the literary formula of the dramatic arch, commencing with an inciting incident, then building tension to a climax followed by a hypnotizing hook into the next chapter. This talented author plies her craft with such expertise that the reader becomes an observer closely interacting with the plot.

Coming from an Irish speaking family, this captivated me with a wholly heart gripping, portrayal of the love between father and son. I can speak for Mimi’s level of authenticity in her use of the idiomatic dialect. In this engrossing novel, the father Joker is such a loveable character.

The plot was scintillating and the female protagonist Renee Knight, a feisty woman not to be crossed. This is a story filled with approaches to wife beating, serial killers and sadistic thieves in which a sexy romance sizzles between the male and female leading characters.

Can’t wait for the next one. Highly recommended.

    Review by Melissa Kleen:

Oh what a fun book! I loved the characters in this book and I hope we can have whole series with them they are just that amazing! This is the first book I have read by Ms. Barbour and I was completely taken aback by how real her characters were.

One of the best examples of her genius with characters is, The O’Reilly, he was the perfect comedic relief his Irish brogue and charm were the perfect offset to the tension and drama created by Renee and Finn’s jobs. While he provided his comedic relief he still managed to be a loving father and serve an integral part in the end of the book.

This book had a perfect balance of heart-string pulling, romance, drama and suspense. I really enjoyed being able to watch Renee deal with her grief and let Finn help her heal and finally accept herself as she is without needing any disguises.

I would really love to read another story with these characters because I just feel like I know them so well already and I don’t want to let them go. Overall this was a wonderful book and I can’t wait to read more by this author.
