A kidnapping. A murder. The past is never past. And Lauren is still haunted by her tragic memories of the Shadow Man.
Twenty-five years ago, Lauren Phelps and her sister Patty were kidnapped from their backyard on Long Island. Lauren escaped her captor, but Patty was killed.
Ever since, Lauren has suffered from nightmares of the “Shadow Man.” Trying to recall his face and avenge her sister’s murder, Lauren, now a kidnapping investigator, enrolls in a clinical trial for a new memory drug.
At the offices of Memory Makers in California, she receives the injections of the Memory Makers’ serum and begins to experience flashbacks of repressed memories. Along with the flashbacks, she receives threats from an anonymous source that point back to her childhood trauma.
Soon, Lauren becomes involved with a fellow trial participant who seeks to recall his own traumatic past. But can Lauren discover the identity of the “Shadow Man” before history repeats itself?
Meet Debbie De Louise:
My name is Debbie De Louise. I’m a reference librarian at a public library on Long Island and the award-winning author of the Cobble Cove cozy mystery series that consists of five books and four stories. I’ve also published six other standalone novels and a non-fiction cat book.
All my books are available on Amazon in paperback and as eBooks and are part of the Kindle Unlimited program. A few are also in large print, hardcover, and audio. My psychological thriller, SEA SCOPE, is also in Spanish. I have a B.A. in English and an MLS in Library Science.
My first novel, a paranormal romance, CLOUDY RAINBOW, was written after my beloved cat, Floppy, died from diabetic and liver complications. The book was dedicated to him, and he is featured as a character in it. CLOUDY RAINBOW was reprinted by my publisher with fresh edits, a new cover, and a few updates.
My second novel, the first book of the Cobble Cove mystery series, A STONE’S THROW, is the story of a widowed librarian who visits her husband’s hometown and finds a new love with the town’s newspaper publisher but also discovers some alarming truths about her husband’s death and its connection to the publisher and his family.
Along with a variety of characters, there is also a cat and dog who play minor but interesting roles in the novel. The other books in my Cobble Cove series include BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE, WRITTEN IN STONE, LOVE ON THE ROCKS, and NO GRAVESTONE UNTURNED. The Cobble Cove Stories, available as eBooks, include CELEBRATING CHRISTMAS WITH MY CHARACTERS, SNEAKY’S CHRISTMAS MYSTERY (winner of the 2020 Cat Writers’ Association’s Muse Medallion award), SNEAKY’S SUMMER MYSTERY, and KITTYKAI’S EASTER MYSTERY.
I’ve also published a romantic comedy novella, WHEN JACK TRUMPS ACE, and three standalone mysteries, REASON TO DIE, SEA SCOPE, and MEMORY MAKERS. I’ve also written a time-travel novel, TIME’S RELATIVE. My non-fiction cat book, PET POSTS: THE CAT CHATS, features full-color photos of my cats and is told from the cats’ points of view about feline health and behavior issues.
I’m a member of International Thriller Writers, Sisters-in-Crime, the Cat Writers’ Association, and Long Island Authors Group and have published articles in Cats Magazine and Catnip (Tufts University Veterinary Newsletter).
I won the Glamour Puss special award from Hartz Corporation for my Catster.com article, “Brushing your cat for bonding, beauty, and better health,” (June 2016). My short mystery, “Stitches in Time” was published in the CAT CRIMES THROUGH TIME Anthology, (1999).
I’ve published several other short stories of various genres in the RED PENGUIN COLLECTION of anthologies and have also been published in Red Penguin’s BLOOM LITERARY MAGAZINE. My poems are featured in the NASSAU COUNTY VOICES IN VERSE 2020 anthology and the 2020 BARDS ANNUAL. I live on Long Island with my husband, Anthony; daughter, Holly; and our cat, Stripey, Harry, and Hermione.

Review by MikiHope:
Lauren Phelps who works as a kidnapping investigator is haunted by her past. Patty, her sister, and she were kidnapped from the sandbox in front of their house.
Her sister was killed. Lauren had escaped but had deeply repressed memories. She could not remember the man’s face and thought of him as the Shadow man.
She saw an ad in the paper about a trial being run in California that might help people regain their repressed memories. She was accepted into the trial and much to her Mother’s distress decided to go.
Although she wasn’t supposed to, she made friends with a couple of the other participants.
I really can’t say much more or will give away the ending! I highly suggest that you read this one–the twists and turns will keep you reading!
