Review by Family of Avid Readers:
What happens when normal life slowly begins to crumble all around you? You learn to survive! Ms. Douglas describes the predicament facing the inhabitant’s of the tiny isle in her novel’s summary, and wastes no time setting the mood of the story.
I will not spoil anything from there.
The creatures are not your run-of-the-mill zombies and the description of their appearance is both original and creepy. Ms. Douglas deftly moves the plot along by having us follow groups of survivors in their varied settings as they try to find shelter and answers.
The origin of the threat is a mystery that begins to come together as the survivors converge on the asylum and its denizens – but there are losses a’plenty along the way, including some characters whose deaths you may take personally! The action is gratifying and the descriptions of the deaths are vivid and gruesome.
The end of the book is both satisfying and allows enough room to explore the story further. I am looking forward to reading more of Ms. Douglas’ works and will be keeping various objects suitable for bludgeoning the undead next to my bed.
