Behold: The Ice Storm Cometh
February 3, 2023
Roger Summers

A message to remember during a chilling time when a lingering winter storm has left us all encased in ice.
The ice comes.
Freezing us, blanketing us into confinement, forced adjustments to routines.
A young woman braves a drive to the store but stops, knocks on the door.
Can she bring us anything?
A young man rings the doorbell.
Any problems?
Can he help in any way?

An anonymous neighbor puts the papers on the front porch.
On the streets, vehicle wheels hopelessly spin. Others get out in the cold and slip ‘n’ slide and push them up the hill. Then others help the helpers do the same.
A pet is lost.
A woman takes it in, cares for it. Goes in search of its owner.
And, if unsuccessful, will search for a new owner.
A family whose home has no heat is invited over by one whose home does.
Such stories abound.
The ice comes.
Freezing us, blanketing us into confinement, forced adjustments to routines.
Reminding of our interdependence.
The thaw will come.
Routines in time will resume.
But the message, the lesson – good weather or bad — will remain:
Look out for each other.
