The Story: Denver stockbroker, Finny Aletter, dreams of quitting her cutthroat job to restore historic houses, but the murder of her boss—and ex-lover—Elliot Fulton keeps her in the world of scavengers.

When a prized manuscript that once belonged to Elliot surfaces, Finny tops the list of possible killers.

Yvonne Montgomery is the award-winning author of two mysteries, Scavenger Hunt (aka Scavengers) and Obstacle Course, and, with the late Mary Jo Adamson, co-author of Bridey’s Mountain, a four-generation Colorado saga.

Yvonne lives in an old Victorian house in Denver’s historic Capitol Hill. Its shifting shadows and creaking stairs in the middle of the night have inspired her latest works, the Wisdom Court books.

Book One, Edge of the Shadow, and Book Two, A Signal Shown, are now available at the Kindle Store. Book Three, All In Bad Time, will be available in the spring of 2015.

Review by Sam from Wyoming:

Just when burned-out stockbroker Finny decides to call it quits and switch to a new career, her boss and secret ex-lover turns up murdered. When she becomes one of the prime suspects, circumstances – including her love-hate relationship with the investigating officer Barelli – propel Finny into amateur detective mode. Even when her life is endangered, she reveals how tough she can be, determined to find out who killed her boss while searching for the precious object someone is killing to possess.

Montgomery does a good job of salting the story with numerous suspects, all equally capable and motivated to commit murder, with twists, turns, and assorted interesting and sordid characters. After meeting Finny’s coworkers, it’s easy to see why she needs a change.

Like the Sue Grafton books, the story takes place before the advent of cell phones. I kept waiting for Finny to pull out a phone and call for help whenever she got into trouble, but the Denver locale and gutsy Finny more than made up for it. A good read. Will definitely get the next one in the series.

Review by Carol Caverly:

Finny Aletter is a successful broker with a prosperous Denver brokerage. Successful, but as burnt out as her long-over affair with her boss. She yearns to quit and put her considerable carpenter skills to use renovating homes. Her plans go awry when she inadvertently bursts into the police investigation of the murder of her boss. In a confrontation with Detective Barelli she quickly becomes suspect #1. In self-defense she turns to detecting and instigates a scavenger hunt for a lost manuscript. The hunt includes scavengers, no less, and turns Finney into a race with death.

Montgomery is a master with descriptions and wonderfully brings to life the Denver neighborhood’s lively mix of young and old, as well as any city’s inevitable bag ladies and bums.

Scavenger Hunt was a fun, entertaining read, and I’ve just downloaded the second in the series, Obstacle Course.
