Now it’s a year later and a group of paranormal investigators want to set up a haunted house and invite the general public in that same abandoned mental hospital. How is he supposed to keep that many people safe from whoever or whatever killed the last group?

Review by NancyofUtah: I love horror stories by Author Regina Puckett. Her imagination and creativity is astounding. In this story, Sheriff Wilson is in a big huff about a haunted house being set up in one of the buildings in an old mental hospital complex. Why is he upset? Because 12 people were killed there, in the same building, the previous year. Deputy Worley felt his boss was getting totally out of control over this as Sheriff Wilson is determined to not let any more killings happen again.

So he decides to volunteer to help the ghost hunters set up the haunted house. Youthful looking Rhonda Byrd has been ghost hunting for over eight years. He explains to her his safety concerns and also that Wallace Webster, a serial killer who killed over 100 children was housed in the facility and died there.

Rhonda is hopeful that she can make contact with the ghost of Wallace Webster, and finally there is contact. This is a very spooky story which unsuspectingly catches the reader off guard. It’s best to read this on a dark, quiet, rainy night to get the best thrill of this truly … spooky … tale. Great job, Regina. Keep the stories coming!

Review by Deborah L. Hartmann: Regina Puckett has done it again! Her unique writing style sets her work apart and sends readers on an enjoyable and slightly different reading experience. Horror fans will be very pleased with this spin off from Mine where the Sheriff finds himself angrily tasked with dealing with the so-called `haunted’ mental hospital.

A group of paranormal investigators want to host a paid haunted house tour at the site and after his last experience the Sheriff is concerned with safety yet unable to stop the event. To satisfy his need to serve and protect, the Sheriff joins the group as they investigate the site for activity while setting up for the haunted house.

The events that unfold as night falls around the hospital will certainly satisfy the avid horror fan and most likely raise the hair on the back of their necks! The plot twists and turns through this scary story and refuses to let you stop reading until the very end. This reviewer recommends starting early enough to finish reading before dark!

Her own desires and their uncontrollable consequences leave her no option but to go forward. Even as her  emotional and sexual need drive her on, there are no certainties ahead. As her previous life crumbles behind her an unexpected and inappropriate ally appears from the rubble to help her onwards.

Maybe now she will be free to explore her new world in which she is still an innocent?

Review by Annell: In the novelette, Love in a Hopeless Place, Lyn is an ordinary person working in a blue-collar job. Author Emma Calin skilfully draws the reader into the personal life of this warehouse worker, sharing with us Lyn’s innermost emotions and desires. She takes us on a journey through a series of life-changing events as they are experienced by our main character.

The detailed delivery of Lyn’s intimate thoughts and feelings is so precise that we easily identify with her and are concerned for her future and her well-being. We worry for Lyn, smile and cry for her, and we applaud her courage in taking a step to find happiness after years of self-sacrifice and denial. I thoroughly enjoyed “Love in a Hopeless Place” and highly recommend this excellent novelette to other readers.

Review by Linn B. Halton: Author Calin sets the scene before you begin reading. You will not be disappointed. Gritty, urban and with an inherent `seediness’; there is some powerful dialogue and the author does a superb job of tapping into the inner core of some pretty raw emotion.

There is a touch of poignancy too, for a reality that does exist for some, but for many goes unseen. The emotional rollercoaster Lyn is on, wanting something she feels she isn’t meant to have, something thrilling yet elicit, comes through very strongly. Is she merely hungry for attention or is it love?

Life isn’t always pretty…
