The Book: Cassidy Jones and the Secret Formula

The Author: Elise Stokes

The Story: One Girl. One Accident. One Incredible Superhero.

Cassidy Jones is your typical fourteen-year-old– that is, until a seemingly harmless accident in the laboratory of a world-renowned geneticist turns her world upside down.

Discovering incredible strength, speed, and enhanced physical senses that defy logic, Cassidy embarks on an action-packed adventure that has her fighting for answers…and for her very life.

About Elise Stokes:

Elise Stokes

Elise Stokes lives with her husband and four children. She was an elementary school teacher before becoming a full-time mom. With a daughter in middle school and two in high school, Elise’s understanding of the challenges facing girls in that age range inspired her to create a series that will motivate girls to value individualism, courage, integrity, and intelligence.

The stories in Cassidy Jones Adventures are fun and relatable, and a bit edgy without taking the reader uncomfortably out of bounds. Cassidy Jones and the Secret Formula, Cassidy Jones and Vulcan’s Gift, Cassidy Jones and the Seventh Attendant, and Cassidy Jones and the Luminous are the first four books in the series.

Review by MCS:

I think what I like best about the character, Cassidy Jones, is that anyone who has lacked confidence or felt awkward or shy can sympathize with her plight. Cassidy is definitely a character in a piece of science fiction, but her very human qualities, played off against the non-human ones she develops, make this an engaging read.

The story is not predictable, and her “talents” don’t magically solve all of her problems and improve her life. I look forward to seeing how the author develops Cassidy and the other key characters as the series continues.

Review by Diane Rapp:

I planned to visit my granddaughter during the Christmas holidays and stared “previewing” potential books to share with her. Imagine my surprise when I read this charming novel. It’s a book that any adult would enjoy while reading to younger members of the family. Cassidy should become a superhero role model for girls in the future.

When Cassidy goes with her news reporter father to interview Professor Serena Phillips, a famous scientist, she accidentally crashes into an experiment and becomes a mutant. (She’s like Spiderman crossed with Hermione from Harry Potter.) Cassidy is a regular fourteen-year-old girl who battles hormones and embarrassment in school while trying to control her enhanced skills.

Complications arise when Serena disappears and then Cassidy’s father is kidnapped. Luckily the scientist’s son Emery shows up to help. He’s got an I.Q. off the charts and knows enough about his mother’s experiment to help Cassidy control her superpowers. They team up to track down the kidnappers and battle a super villain to save the world.
I’ll be happy to share this exciting tale with my granddaughter! Luckily I’ve already bought the sequel, since I know she’ll be anxious to continue the story.
