Eyes of a Lioness
Photographer: John McCutcheon
FIVE OF THE LAST SIX YEARS have found John and me in Kruger National Park, South Africa. It is a place that will call us back every year as long as we can make the trip. As a result of John’s searching for the perfect shot and my searching for the perfect blog material, we have discovered the best wildlife viewing areas.
This year John and I discovered a pride of lion living in a large outcropping of rocks where they have never, in the years past, been. Lucky for the in-car photographer, some of these young lionesses were lying on the rocks near the road.
Fourteen kilometers south of Skukuza in Kruger National Park the road intersects H 1-1. Probably a half a klick further east a hugh outcropping of rocks is clearly visible. Here we found these lovely ladies relaxing.
Totally aware of our presence, they didn’t give us a moment of interest. How such benign faces belie such ferocious predatory instincts is startling.
